Shabrys

I art thou, thou art I

Combo notes

  • Health: 8,000

  • Nothing special here - just remember that the bull may mess with timings on the first hits, and will prevent orb setups from working normally

Unique responses and punishes

Move
Response/notes

j.B

You can usually 2B this due to how floaty she is, just be careful. Also j.A works to outspeed it

Any bull move

Run up 2B, if Shabrys isn't covering it. Note that any attack with over 400 damage can break the bull if it isn't guarding (this includes chain knuckle, and j.B from blue and above)

2C (bull uppercut)

All dashes will avoid it if done early enough, can technically be stopped by hitting Shabrys a lot while it starts up, but very unreliable for Labrys so not really worth trying.

DP

DP back if you can see it in time. On block, microdash 2B should work at every range, but you might have to dash a bit longer the further you are

Brutal impact

Unlike yours, can be blocked - although note that she can send the bull out during it to cover herself, making no punish truly safe to do unless you're looking for it. On block, you have plenty of time to attempt to punish it as long as the bull hasn't been sent out, and it's FC recovery. If it has been sent out, you'll need to use a reversal to guarantee a punish. DP will work but needs to be held/done very late for it to land, and note the possibility of a clash with the bull. Beast, gears, brutal impact, and IK all work after flash

TV punch

C version you must instantly roll, D version you must wait slightly to roll - you can OS this by looking at Labrys, and as soon she either moves or proximity guards, hit roll. Beast, gears (although with a delay to OS versions), brutal impact, and IK all work after flash

Chain knuckle

Similar to yours, can be jumped or swept, just remember she also has a bull to back her up

Titanomachia

Generally unpunishable on use if done right (including as a cancel from DP - you can't punish this unless you IB'd, in which case, 5A). Remember, the only way to stop the bull attacks are with supers, or hitting Shabrys (including grab attempts, even if they get tech'd)

Unblockable setups

Usually occurs after an SB guillotine (sometimes after a reverse guillotine).

50/50 between having to delay tech into upback j.A, or tech immediately into upback j.A depending on the setup. Gold burst/beast can also be used here to escape.

Overview and tips

Dustloop page here

This is quite the odd matchup - Shabrys is pretty much identical in terms of neutral, except she also has a bull that can cover for her and create full screen threats. This seems bad, but in exchange you get to hit the bull to gain (half) axe level and cancel off it, as well as taking a card in most cases. This allows you to be quite aggressive. Also note that she's quite floaty and you're not, so your movement will tend to be tighter than hers, which gives you some advantage in the close range. Her 2B is interesting in that it is head invuln faster than yours (7f instead of 8f), but it comes out slower (20f instead of 18f), so if you keep low to the ground, you can get away with j.B before it comes out sometimes.

Pressure here is also odd. Shabrys DP is way faster than yours (15f instead of 26f), but she does take the full blockstop of all attacks during its startup, and has no charge option. This actually makes it somewhat doable to respond with your own DP. Her reversals also aren't amazing, so if you get her blocking, things usually go well (plus there's the bonus axe level gained form hitting the bull). If she gets you blocking, as usual things aren't great, as she has actual good mix (her guillotine axe only has the final hit for example, and she can confirm mix into bull attacks that work as part of pressure anyway. Stay on your guard and watch for those overheads.

Some final quirks that you'll notice in Sbabrys players that you can exploit:

  • Chain along with 2C is common after they blue burst you away - this can be rolled for a punish

  • In general they are quite defensive during titano - don't try entering strings, either go for grabs or wait out the storm (although do keep moving to prevent any easy setups on their part

  • They will usually try the immediate unblockable first rather than the delayed one, meaning you should do delay tech upback j.A once you spot the setup first

Main adjustments to make

Orb effectively doesn't work here as it gets blocked by the bull and isn't even strong enough to break it. Don't use it ever, always go for spike.

Safejump works well here, although remember that you're now looking for j.B getting blocked by the DP armour, although the 5A you do after may also hit depending on timings.

DP can work ok here, especially at range or if an overhead is coming, but as always, be careful. Also note that her frame data is very different, so don't try and create the same gaps that you do on Labrys to DP in.

Shabrys DP is kinda weak as expressed before, but only if you're hitting her constantly and keeping gaps small... so keep those gaps small.

Given what was said before, you'll always want to be going for spike. Even in corner, orb will get absorbed by bull before it does anyway, so don't bother with it.

j.B somewhat freely here - you will face her j.B which is the same speed, but you can do it lower to the ground and with higher general payoffs. Shabrys 2B is decent with high payoff on CH, but very slow, so as long as you aren't moving slowly or double jumping, you should be fine.

Chain knuckle generally isn't great here as it leaves you wide open to bull attacks, but is strong enough to break the bull (not something you want given the recovery but it's something). SB can be used to counter Shabrys chain if you see it coming.

Gears is ok - Shabrys has simple-ish metered answers (brutal impact gets her hit after it hits you, and D TV punch can work if done late and close, but will always hit you anyway) and can answer it meterless (although will likely lose a card in the process).

j.D usage can be ok here - just be aware you can be 2C'd out of it if you're not careful, and none of the gears are strong enough to break the bull by themselves.
